Dr. Richard Sagebiel is a pathologist in dermatology and co-director of the UCSF Melanoma Clinic. Sagebiel examines tissue from biopsies to determine if cancer cells exist and if so, the type and severity of the cancer.

Sagebiel joined UCSF Medical Center in 1970, helped to start the first Melanoma Clinic in 1971 and joined the faculty fulltime in 1978. He earned a bachelor's degree at Yale University and medical degree at Harvard Medical School. He completed a residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a research fellowship at the Chester Beatty Research Institute in London. He has published many articles regarding moles and melanoma, which has been his interest and subspeciality for over 30 years. He is currently a clinical professor of dermatology at UCSF.
